CORY WEEDS NEW ALBUM “MANY DEEDS OF”
June 4, 2010
At the age of 36, Cory Weeds is hardly the wunderkind he once was. Afterall, by the time Mozart was his age, he’d already been dead for a year. Still, his many deeds are, indeed, impressive. I don’t need to itemize them here for you, because they’re well-documented. But the fact he bought a jazz club in Vancouver and turned it into one of the world’s best (according to Downbeat magazine, no less), churns out jazz albums on his own label featuring some of the best local, national and international players, hosts a weekly radio show, and still manages to grow as a musician makes me feel like a lazy sod. I mean, I am but I don’t need to be reminded of it so forcefully. And as you can see on the cover, he’s even been able to start a family. The guy is a doer, no question about it.
This album drives that point home. Getting American Hammond B3 virtuoso Joey DeFrancesco as his sideman is telling. This marks the third recording as leader in as many years for Weeds. And if it seems he has a special fondness for organists, having played with Dr. Lonnie Smith and then Mike LeDonne in his first two albums, you’re on to something. read more….
ONLY 4 DAYS LEFT TO VOTE THE SEEDS TOP 50
June 2, 2010
The Fox 99.3 FM Vancouver have launched their battle of the bands “The Seeds” and voting is coming to an end. Only 4 days are remaining to vote for your favorite BC band. The winner of The Seeds win A lease of a Mazda CX9 for a year, A Demo Recording deal from Maple Music and will work for the year with some of the biggest names in the Canadian Music Industry and more. DMA is very proud to work with last year’s winner Goodbye Beatdown and wish all the bands in the competition this year good luck.
Inhabitants continue to push forward into new sonic territory with “A Vacant Lot“, their third full-length on Drip Audio. Spacious and expressive, the new album explores the dynamic relationship between chaos and form through experimental sound, intuitive group interplay and instrumental composition. There is new diversity in the music; rich textured landscapes augmented by electronics and feedback are contrasted with moments of intimate acoustic minimalism. A reflective mood pervades the new landscape Inhabitants occupy on A Vacant Lot, their improvisations and compositions permeated with an uncommon, yet alluring lyricism.
